Cross-Cutting Research Support
In this subtask, contributions from the Theory and Computation project will be essential to effectively address many of SERC’s scientific challenges. A core group of seven PIs, most directly embedded in individual projects, meets regularly. The PIs will furnish broad theoretical and computational support as needed, in addition to contributing at various length scales to the multi-scale, multiphysics Helios Simulator.
New analytical instrumentation will be essential for the success of Helios’ SERC. A second team, scientists in the Analytical Instruments Development and Applications project of the Cross-Cutting Research Support subtask, develops new analytical instrumentation and helps to identify and prioritize critical capital equipment needs for projects throughout the Center. Currently, it is looking at the phenomenal imaging capability of the new DOEsponsored TEAM electron microscope, and exploring ways to obtain this capability, modified for SERC. SERC instrumentation is to be shared among all SERC researchers as needed.
